Calvin's Birth Story

Well I'm finally getting around to posting more than just pictures. Calvin is doing wonderful. He is a very hungry baby and likes to eat and play all night long, but we are adjusting slowly and enjoying our first few days with him. He hasn't been pooping as much as he should be so I've been supplementing with formula after breastfeeding. We went to the hospital for a weight check yesterday and he weighed 7 lbs 13 oz, which the pediatrician said was great. I've been wanting to post about his whole birth story so here it goes...

I woke up Tuesday morning around 3am with cramps but that wasn't really anything new so I didn't think much of it. Around 5:30 I decided to hop in the shower to see if that would relax me and stop the cramping. That's when the contractions started, mostly in my back. I started timing them and they were very consistently 5 minutes apart. I woke up Korey and let him know that I thought I might be in labor, so we started getting things together. By around 7 they were 2-3 minutes apart and pretty unbearable. We got to hospital around 9:30 and they checked me and said I was 4 cm already! I couldn't believe it, since I was still closed at my appointment on Friday. Everything seemed to fly by after that... After about 4 hours of back labor I gave in and got the epidural. I apparently wasn't cooperating very well because it took 3 tries to get the catheter in. 30 minutes later I was still feeling the contractions so the anesthesiologist came back to readjust things (that wasn't fun at all). Finally I was able to rest and by around 4:00 I was 9 1/2 cm. I pushed for about 2 hours and Calvin was born at 5:54pm. We were all so shocked when Korey said "It's a BOY" and even more shocked when they said he weighed 8 lbs 7 oz!! He spent the next day up in NICU for some breathing issues (they just wanted to observe him since he was breathing a little too fast), but we got to spend the day up there with him and he came down Wednesday evening around 6pm just in time for the family visitors. Went home Thursday night and have been hanging out since then enjoying our little man!

It's a boy!!

Sorry for the late update! Baby Boy Padgett was born at 5:54pm and weighed in at 8 lbs 7 oz. He is so handsome, we wil post pics tomorrow. Everyone is happy and healthy (and exhausted). No name yet, but we will keep you posted! I will also post a longer birth story, everything went smoothly and we are happy is finally here!

Water Breaking

The doctor just came in and checked everything out. Laura decided to get the epidural and is a lot more comfortable now. She is now at 7 centimeters and her water was broken by the doctor. She can hopefully get a little rest and watch a movie.

In Labor!!!!!!!!!!

We just got checked into our suite at the hospital. Laura is already 4 cm and doing great. She is a champ. We are calling people and letting them know the baby should be here soon. Thanks for all the support.

Going to the hospital

Contractions are 2-3 minutes apart. Just called my doctor and we are on our way to the hospital. We will keep blog updated.

False Alarm?

Been up since 3am with cramping. I hopped in the shower at 5:30 to relax and see if they would stop... Now having cramping in lower back and belly every about every 5 minutes. Still bearable pains, trying to hold off calling until they get more painful. They say you will know when you are in labor and I'm not convinced this isn't a false alarm...

5 days or less!

The doctor set an induction date for next week. If baby has not arrived by Thursday, I will be induced in the morning. We will actually go in Wednesday night at 7pm. They are going to insert a prostaglandin gel to (hopefully) help my cervix dilate/efface before the induction Thursday morning. At my appointment on Friday I was still just a fingertip dilated. We are still praying baby will decide to come before then so I can avoid the pitocin but I can't wait too much longer because of school... I start clinicals in less than 3 weeks. We are excited about having a date set but nervous! I'm so scared the induction will be unsuccessful and I'll end up with a a c-section and no time to recover. We go in Tuesday for an ultrasound to check the weight of the baby and amniotic fluid level. The doctor isn't concerned about either but since my due date is Monday, he's just checking to be on the safe side.

No matter what, Baby Padgett will be here next week! We'll keep ya updated if anything happens before then.

Weekend with the Padgetts!

Donnie (Korey's stepbrother), Korey, Tony (Korey's dad), and Josh (Korey's brother)

Korey with Aiden and his niece Madi (Josh's daughter)

Aiden and Madi

Josh, Korey, and Donnie

Aiden was a flirt of course

Jen (Josh's wife) and I with Grandbabies #2 and #3!
(Jen is due in October)

Korey, Madi, and the sock monkey Kor picked out for her
(he loves those things, we got Aiden one for Christmas)

We spent the weekend in Amelia, Ohio with Korey's dad and step-mom, Bitsie. His brother Josh and wife Jen flew in from Minnesota to see everyone. We were so excited to meet their daughter Madi. Madi is Korey's only niece and we have been dying to meet her since she was born last March! Jen and Josh are expecting Baby #2 in a couple months. Since Aiden is only 3 months older than Madi, we brought him with us. He loved playing and flirting with Madi. I was hoping Baby Padgett would be here before they came in because it will probably be awhile before we see them again, but no cooperation there. : ) We had a fun weekend catching up with everyone.

39 weeks and no action

Our 39 week appointment was Friday and while everything looks good and healthy, the doctor "warned" me to not count on a baby coming before my due date next week. My cervix hasn't changed, still closed and 50% effaced. Baby dropped a little bit whicItalich I hadn't noticed
(still icing my ribs every night!), but I guess my belly was measuring lower than last week. At least all my walking is doing something. After next week if I still haven't gone into labor they will do an ultrasound to estimate the baby's size and make sure my amniotic fluid isn't getting too low. We will talk about induction then, though Korey and I are really hoping it doesn't come to that. We think the baby will come when he/she is ready and I am actually excited about going into labor naturally. Still have all week so hopefully this baby will start working on something. : )

38 week belly

Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who could make it to the baby shower today! It was great seeing everyone. Thank you to the Grandmas for planning such an awesome day. Korey and I are all set, we got so many great things. For those who couldn't make it, we can't wait to see you soon and have you meet Baby Padgett!

Nursery Pictures

38 week appointment

Just got back from our 38 week appointment (I am 37 wks 4 days today). Still just a fingertip dilated, 50% effaced, -2 station. Baby hasn't dropped yet and besides some cramping and annoying Braxton Hicks, there hasn't been much action! Trying to remind myself that I have 2 more weeks and that I can start getting impatient then. : ) Korey and I have been watching a childbirth DVD called Laugh and Learn About Childbirth. It's broken down into little 20 or 30 minute "classes" so we've been trying to watch one every night. Since we didn't take any childbirth classes at the hospital, this has been very helpful and the lady who teaches it is actually pretty funny and entertaining.

Yesterday I organized and cleaned for 6 hours (not sure if it was "nesting," I was really just making myself finally get things done). The nursery is finished. Michelle has to finish painting the tree mural over the baby's crib and Korey is putting our rocker/glider together today. I love how everything came together and I'm proud to say that most everything was borrowed/given to us/refurbished from Goodwill. We enjoyed "going green" by using eco-friendly paint, bamboo blinds, organic sheets, and recycled furniture and art pieces! I will post pics a little later.

37 weeks

So week 37 has begun and I am starting to feel not so great. I am crampy and nauseous every day now and I feel like this baby is just running out of room. My ribs are so sore by the end of the day from my little soccer player's strong feet. I put an ice pack on my right side last night because they were just burning. Not to mention the stabbing pains I have been getting in my upper right back for the last 2-3 weeks (doctor thinks baby is just laying on a nerve, the pain goes away when I get up and walk around so I do that a couple times a night during bathroom breaks.) And my feet swelled up at the concert last Friday and have yet to recover. There are my honest complaints... 3 more weeks of this? Poor Korey. :) At our appointment last Friday my cervix hadn't changed much and the nurse practioner (doctor was out of town) said that while my cervix was softening, baby was still high and has not dropped into my pelvis yet. They hooked me up to a monitor for 20 minutes and I had 3 contractions but nothing to get excited about. Baby looked great and we have another appointment on Friday... Pray for some progress... We are ready to meet this little one.

Dave Concert

Baby's first Dave concert!

We went to the Dave Matthews Band concert Friday night in Noblesville. It was a great concert and even though we cut out before the last couple songs (my ankles had become unrecognizable), I am glad I stuck it out and went! We have been to 12 Dave concerts together over the last 7 years and love camping out for the Friday/Saturday shows at Verizon and Riverbend every summer. I slept in the back of the car on an air mattress Friday night and it wasn't too bad except for the climbing in and out to go to the bathroom all night. We left early Saturday morning. One night of camping is enough at 9 months pregnant. : )
